#FreebieFriday 4 SWEET TREATS SO HEALTHY THEY'RE BASICALLY SALADS
Proper comfort food that’ll satisfy your sweet craving without the guilt? Bring it! Click: www.hcgbanting.co.za
(See recipes below)
1. Five-Minute Superfood Mousse
The cacao is packed with antioxidants, the banana and avo with potassium (and good fats) and honey is a natural antibacterial. A dessert that keeps your heart and body strong? Who needs dinner anyway?
— 1 frozen banana
— Flesh of 2 avocados
— ¼ cup Xylitol
— ¼ cup raw cacao powder
— 3 to 4 tbsp coconut cream
1/ Place all ingredients in a Nutribullet and process until a thick, smooth mousse forms.
2/ Serve with berries and mint (optional).
2. Sugar-Free Poached Pears
This is a great dinner-party crowd-pleaser, plus all the alcohol burns off during the cooking process.
— 1 bottle red wine
— 1.5 litres water (or enough to cover the pears)
— 1 cinnamon stick
— 1 vanilla pod (split)
— 10 cloves
— 6 firm pears, peeled
1/ Place all the ingredients in a large pot, bring to the boil and poach until pears are cooked through (but not too soft) and reddish in colour, 20 to 30 minutes. Remove and set aside.
2/ Serve as is or with a dollop of Greek yoghurt.
3. Protein-Packed Brownies
The citrus flavour is fairly mild, so don’t shy away if you’re not generally a fan of the chocolate-orange combo… And why would anyone say no to extra antioxidants? Plus, protein!
— 4 free-range extra-large eggs
— 200g dark chocolate (raw cacao paste or Lindt 90% Cocoa)
— Juice and zest of 2 oranges
— ¼ cup Xylitol
— Seeds from 1 vanilla pod
— 1 tsp baking powder
— 1.5 cups almond flour
— 1 tbsp coconut oil
1/ Preheat oven to 180°C.
2/ Whisk eggs with an electric mixer until light and frothy.
3/ Melt the chocolate gently in a double boiler or in the microwave (check it often or it could burn).
4/ Add the orange juice and zest to the Xylitol and vanilla.
5/ Pour in the melted chocolate and mix until well combined, then gently stir in the baking powder and almond flour.
6/ Grease a baking tin with coconut oil. Pour in the mixture and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on how gooey you like your brownies. Serve with raspberries (optional).
4. Immune-Boosting Jelly
Now here’s a sweet way to get your RDA of vitamin C! Besides helping you fight off colds and flu, the C helps your body absorb iron more efficiently and aids in repairing tissue and the formation of collagen. Healthy and glowing? Hell, yeah!
— Juice of 1 lemon
— Juice of 3.5 large naartjies or mineolas (slice the remaining half into discs for garnishing)
— 1 tbsp coconut sugar
— ¼ tsp agar agar
1/ Place all the juice and the sugar in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
2/ Sprinkle the agar agar over the liquid. Stir until dissolved while you bring the mixture to the boil. Once it boils, bring it down to a simmer.
3/ Line a glass bowl with naartjie rings or divide among two wine or bubbly glasses. Pour in the jelly mix and set in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
4/ Serve as is or with some vegan coconut ice cream.
Depending on the size of your naartjies, you may need to add an extra one to yield enough juice (you need at least one cup).

First, we got into body oil. Then came face oil and hair oil. Now, there's a new oil in town: lip oil, the prettiest new way to lube your lips.
Unlike balms, which have a high concentration of wax, lip oils are liquid and yield a gloss-like finish -- without the stickiness that accompanies most glosses. Lip oils also soothe and condition severe chapped lips. Plus, lots of the newest products are tinted and contain beneficial ingredients to mak...e lips and feel soft and youthful. You could say lip oil is the BB cream of lip products, providing sheer, gorgeous color while it improves lips over time.

#FreebieFriday HEADS UP TO ALL YOU DECOR FUNDIES!
New Collab Project: MRP Home X Gaby Beyers.
Cape Town-based designer Gaby Beyers has teamed up with MRP Home to launch a brand-new collab collection this April.
Known for her use of photographic textiles, Gaby wants her creations to be tactile, textural and not limited to wall-mounted art.
The range, which does include wall art, also features duvet covers, decor items and scatter cushions, and centres around the theme of “The Sea Inside”. Inspired by the ocean, which Gaby admits having a strong connection to, the collection explores the finer details associated with the sea. Gaby used the symmetrical and geometric patterns found in macro images of coral to inform her designs.
MRP Home has run collabs with a string of local designers and artists before, including Michael Chandler, Mia Widlake and Olivia Villet.
The MRP Home collab with Gaby Beyers will be in selected stores nationwide as part of the brand’s Autumn catalogue from 20 April 2017.

#FreebieFriday 10 APPS THAT SAVE & MAKE YOU MOOLAH! (PLUS a clever money app designed especially for toddlers)
Because we know times are tough, we put together a list of the best money apps out there. You can find them all on Google Play or iTunes.
Some are budgeting apps. Some will help you save money. Some are money making apps that you can use to actually get cash back every month.
1. Spending tracker
BEST FOR: BUDGETING
With this app, you’ll have your very own budget tracker and calculator in your pocket. It’s simple to use: set your budget, log all of your transactions, and track your spending.
BEST FOR: CONSOLIDATION
If you want to see your money all in one place, this app is for you. Link your cards, accounts, loans and rewards, track your spending habits, and set your personalised budget, based on your spending.
3. Fuel Log
BEST FOR: FUEL LOGGING
The high price of petrol and diesel these days is enough to send anyone into a mild panic, so being able to track how much you’re spending, and how far you’re getting on your hard-earned rand, is incredibly useful.
4. Money Mammals Save for a Goal
BEST FOR: TEACHING LITTLE ONES
It’s important to learn how to budget and save money early, and to help introduce your children to the vital concept of saving, this app is full of educational videos, tips and valuable information to get them budget conscious as early as possible.
Money saving apps
BEST FOR: COMPARING PRICES
Gone are the days of trawling through websites comparing microwaves so that you can shop at the store that offers you the best deal. Instead, you can get the Pricecheck app to do all the hard work for you.
BEST FOR: DISCOUNTS ON CARS
Buying a new car can be seriously overwhelming. With all the makes and models out there, it’s tough to know which one to choose, never mind knowing how much you should be paying.
7. The Entertainer
BEST FOR: SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES
The Entertainer is the only money app on our list that isn’t free, but if you’re out on the town every second night, it’ll end up saving you cash.
It’s currently available for Cape Town (R495), Joburg & Pretoria (R495) and Durban (R395).
Money making apps
BEST FOR: EVERYDAY SAVINGS
An app that pays you money for stuff you were going to buy anyway sounds too good to be true, but we promise, it isn’t. So far, SnapnSave has paid South Africans more than R2 million in cash.
BEST FOR: OCCASIONAL CASH BACK
Yes, WeChat is chat and messaging app, but it also offers special promotions (where you get cash for buying certain products through the app) and it’s a great way to maximise the cash back you can get from other apps. For instance, if you book SnapnSave deals through WeChat, you’ll get paid double your money back.
BEST FOR: PHOTO BUFFS
This clever photo-sourcing app connects photographers with people who want to buy images. And by photographers, we mean anyone with a smartphone or camera. Upload your photos to the app, tag them and then see if they sell.
Saving money has never been more easy!

#FreebieFriday HOW TO MAKE AN EASTER BUNNY WREATH!
Make this cute wreath this Easter and simply reuse it for many more to come.
You will need
duck eggs/quail eggs/any other eggs of your choice
1 x metal nail (to puncture the eggs)
1 x 35cm-diameter circular vine wreath (for the bunny’s body)
2 x 25cm-diameter smaller wreaths (for the head and ears)
sturdy brown florist wire
1 x metal ring or hook (to fasten to the wreath for hanging)
variety of flowers and foliage (we used indigenous fynbos like pincushions and proteas)
variety of natural feathers
How to do it
Start by hollowing out the eggs. Carefully pierce a small hole in the top and bottom of each one, using the metal nail. Placing your mouth around the top hole, blow the contents of the eggs out of the bottom hole. Enlarge the hole if the contents don’t run out easily. Very gently rinse the eggs in water to clean them inside.
Position and bind one of the smaller 25cm circular wreaths to the larger wreath, using the florist wire. This will form the head and body of your Easter bunny.
Separate the remaining smaller wreath into loose strands. Using the florist wire, bend and weave them into 2 ear shapes. Bind the 2 ears to the top of the smaller 25cm head wreath, positioning them where you wish to have the ears.
Thread thin florist wire through the holes of the eggs. Bind the eggs to the wreath. Arrange large flowers in the wreath and secure into position with florist wire, if needed.
Entwine and weave the remaining feathers and flowers into your bunny wreath.
Attach the metal ring to the wreath, using florist wire, and hang on a door or wall to display.

#FreebieFriday TECHNOLOGY IMPACTS YOUR SLEEP!
Hands up if you are guilty of using your phone in bed! Most of us do. Unfortunately, that sneaky social media check at bedtime might be doing more harm than you thought. You might have heard by now that technology can cause problems with sleep habits.
Here’s how to sleep better without giving up all of your devices:
•Use night-time settings to reduce the blue light (this light has the biggest impact on receptors) on electronic devices.
•If you use an e-reader at night, change the settings so the page is black with white text (instead of the other way around).
•Try to have a regular bedtime and put your devices down before you start getting ready for bed.
•Set your phone to silent before you go to bed, or turn notifications off so your sleep isn’t disrupted during the night.
•Try to avoid using your phone or tablet in bed.
•Make sleep a priority in your day-to-day life. Sleep is important for your health, so try to make sure you’re getting enough.
The main thing to keep in mind is screen time can affect the amount of restful sleep you’re getting. Sleep is when your body recovers, so it’s important you are getting enough of it!

#FreebieFriday WHAT EXACTLY IS GELISH DIP?
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, our social media pages were flooded with pictures of people dipping their nails in beautifully coloured powder, and coming out with the most perfect manicure we’ve ever seen.
Basically it’s a manicure that fills the gap between a standard Gelish mani and regular acrylic nails.
Rather than applying many layers of polish and spending time drying your nails under a lamp, your nail technician applies a base coat, dips your nails into a pigmented powder, repeats, buffs, and voila (well, pretty much!).
If there are any lumps and bumps, they’ll buff these away (so the results can be smoother than a regular Gelish mani). The whole process takes less than 30 minutes — ideal for us busy ladies on the go!
a Gelish Dip mani is harder than regular Gelish, and while it’s also meant to last 2 weeks, our beauty editor has had hers on for almost 3 weeks and there’s not a chip in sight.
The price will vary a bit from salon to salon, but it will be around R50 to R80 more than standard a Gelish mani. Don’t forget about your time saving, though.
So if you’re after a fab finish and time saving, give this a try! Although you still have to soak the polish off, it seemed to come off easier than a regular Gelish mani.

#FreebieFriday FOUR LEAF CLOVER FOLKLORE.
The four-leaf clover is a rare variation of the common three-leaf clover. According to tradition, such clovers bring good luck: In addition, each leaf is believed to represent something: the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck. Chances of discovering a four leaf clover are 1:10 000. For that reason alone we see it as quite lucky indeed. We are simply loving Pandora's beautiful Irish themed charm. www.hcgbanting.co.za

#FreebieFriday MINI LOW-CARB GALAXY DOUGHNUTS RECIPE!
What can we say, except live long and prosper.
1 cup nut flour...
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 Tbsp Xylitol
2 free range eggs
60g cream cheese or 1/4 of a 230g block
1 tsp vanilla extract/ essence
2 Tbsp coconut oil
With a blending stick, mix the cream cheese, vanilla, xylitol and eggs together to a thin custardy consistency. Add the nut flour and baking powder and stir into the egg mix.
Melt a bit of coconut oil into each mould. Scoop half tablespoonfuls into the pre warmed donut moulds and follow machine instructions from there. (I keep mine in a bit longer than suggested.)
Immediately dip into or coat with your preferred topping and eat while hot for the best little fiesta in your mouth.
Yields 24 mini’s
1/2 cup cream
2 Tbsp butter
1 – 2 Tbsp Xylitol (We tend to prefer less sweet…)
In a saucepan on medium – high heat, allow the ingredients to boil and reduce for about 3 – 5 minutes while constantly whisking. You want it to be too thick and glossy. Just be careful not to burn this sauce, rather reduce heat and simmer longer if you feel unsure.
Divide the glaze mix among four small bowls and colour each bowl of icing with a few drops of the different hues of gel/food colouring(i.e. Blue, purple, pink etc.). Place dollops of the various coloured icings together in a larger bowl. Using a skewer/fork, give the icings a gentle swirl.
Dunk the doughnuts generously into the swirled icing and set aside. Dust with desiccated coconut and serve. For a thicker, high fat ‘icing’ consistency ad some cream cheese to your glaze after cooling.

#FreebieFriday CAULIFLOWER GRILLED CHEESE SUPREME RECIPE.
You've never had cauliflower like this before! It's healthy, it's cheesy and it's sooooo non-cheatingly good.
1 head cauliflower, (to make about 4 cups processed cauliflower)
2 eggs, lightly beaten...
1/2 c. finely grated Parmesan
1/2 tsp. oregano
1 1/2 c. shredded white Cheddar
1. Cut cauliflower into florets. Process cauliflower florets in a food processor until the texture resembles rice. Alternatively, you can grate the cauliflower.
2. In a medium bowl, combine processed cauliflower, eggs, Parmesan and oregano. Mix until evenly combined then season with salt and pepper.
3. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Spray with cooking spray then scoop the cauliflower mixture into a small patty on one side of the pan. Repeat to form a second patty on the other side. (These are your “bread” slices.) Press down on both pieces with a spatula and cook until golden underneath, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until the other sides are golden, about 3 minutes more.
4. Top one cauliflower slice with cheese then place the other cauliflower slice on top. Cook until the cheese is melted, about 2 minutes more per side. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

#FreebieFriday EAT SMART CARBS. Here’s how....
This chart below shows that not all carbs are created equal. A few key things you should take away from The Hierarchy of Carbohydrates.
1. Foods at the bottom of the list are more carb- and calorie-dense. They generally contain fewer nutrients. As you move up the list, foods become less carb- and calorie-dense. They generally contain more nutrients.
2. Eating foods from the top of the list will make you feel fuller than if you ate foods from the bottom of the list.
3. You want to eat more foods from the top than you do the bottom. Try to reduce and/or eliminate foods and drinks from the bottom two positions at all times except for special occasion eating.
4. If you need to further lower your carb (or calorie) intake for greater fat loss and better control of your blood sugar, then work to reduce and/or eliminate foods in the next group on the list. Adopting this approach to carb restriction will help you focus on nutrient-dense carbs.
5. Never remove one of the carb groups from your diet if you are still eating foods from a group below it. For example, don't cut out bagels from your diet if you are still eating cookies.
A little less confusing, right? So here's how to use The Hierarchy of Carbohydrates:
Step 1: For one day, write down everything that you eat. Tip: Do this as the day progresses, not at the end of the day. (You'll be much less accurate if you wait until the end.)
Step 2: Go through your food log and identify the carbs you are eating and where they sit in the hierarchy. This is as simple as writing the number in the hierarchy next to the food (e.g. broccoli , bagel , etc.)
Step 3: Look for foods labeled one and two. What can you replace them with?
Step 4: Make those replacements over the next two weeks. Don't do anything else until you are consistently able to do so.
Step 5: If you don't have any foods labeled one or two then look at your list again to see if you are eating more five and six labeled foods than three and four labeled foods. If not, identify three ways that you can increase the amount of five and six labeled foods and decrease the number of three labeled foods. Also, don't worry about eating less fruit. I've only had to tell one client over the years that they were eating too much fruit.
By moving through these five steps and putting The Hierarchy of Carbohydrates into action, you will make huge strides in smart carb control, which will help optimize your weight and improve your health—all with far less confusion.
